Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Major possibilities of coronavirus spreading: People who are in close contact with infected person (within average distance 6 feet)Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes What are the symptoms this coronavirus causes? The virus can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill by suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against the flu will not work. Recovery depends on the strength of the immune system. Many of those who have died were already in poor health based on the statistics. • There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).• The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. Precautions / Prevention from Coronavirus (COVID-19) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick Maintain at least three feet distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth • Stay home when you are sick • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then dispose of the tissue safely • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe • Wearing a mask Wearing a mask is not necessary unless you are taking care of an infected person. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does recommend that only infected people wear masks to prevent the spread of the virus. If you are sick: You should wear a face mask when you are around other people (e.g., sharing a room or vehicle) and before you enter a health care provider’s office. If you are not able to wear a face mask (for example, because it causes trouble breathing), then you should do your best to cover your coughs and sneezes, and people who are caring for you should wear a face mask if they enter your room. Learn what to do if you are sick. If you are NOT sick: You do not need to wear a face mask unless you are caring for someone who is sick (and they are not able to wear a face mask). Face masks may be in short supply and they should be saved for caregivers. • Wash your hands often Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand Sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water when hands are visibly dirty. • Seek medical attention immediately If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. • Travel advisory Keep in mind the travel advisory set out by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. • Stay home if you are sick Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care.
